It is that time of year again and this year the retail outlets begun their mind numbing advertising barrage well in advance. Christmas, as we knew it, has ceased to exist. The true meaning of the holiday has been lost to so many and it will probably never be realized again. It is no longer sufficient to give just any gift. People are expecing the best and, in most cases, the best means more expensive. Children are no longer aware of why the season is celebrated. The birth of Christ has been replaced by the images and stories of a jolly, old man in a red suit. When was the last time you enjoyed Christmas mass with your family? I would guess that as more time passes the more materialistic we become. You cannot blame any one thing for this; except, perhaps greed. Conversely, greed is quite the opposite of what Christmas stands for. Unfortunately, the retail stores, television stations and media in general are too busy cashing in to be giving out.
I challenge you this year, though it may be too late, not to buy anything but the most necessary of gifts and even those should be limited to the children. Instead of spending time shopping try and spend some time with family and friends. How about giving your money to those in need instead of those who already have? More importantly, take the time to educate yourself and perhaps those you love about the true meaning of this holiday.
Merry Christmas!
